Barrel cacti are day-bloomers. The sun triggers the flowers to open and the same blossom may bloom for two or three days. The monsoon rains seem to trigger the event. After a good soaking, all the barrel cacti start blooming. Not all buds open at the same time, though, so one plant can actually have different flowers blooming for a couple of weeks. It's a nice long show once it gets started.
