Light Sculpture
This is an image from a very windy day at the bottom of a very beautiful slot canyon. While the Colorado Plateau is well known for its beautiful sandstone, this also means that there is also an abundance of sand lying about. When the wind picks up to 40 mph or higher, sand is drifting across open areas and the air is filled with fine particles. In the depths of a slot canyon, the wind is barely felt, but the drifting sand drops in like fine snow. This image is from a hike with friends on a day with such winds. Fearing what the sand might do to my camera or lens, I found a cubby hole in one wall of the canyon that provided a bit of shelter. This was the view looking out at the opposite wall. As the light ricocheted off the walls, it created patterns that didn't so much define the wall as it did to make the wall into an abstract composition of light. Depth and texture seemed to disappear until it was just the sculpted light and a steady drizzle of sand.
