While I love the unusual sandstone creations found on the Colorado Plateau, there is great diversity of light here. In autumn, the turning leaves in Zion National Park rival the sandstone for my attention. Even though Zion is low and dry, its hanging canyons and wet drainages support abundant plant life. Simply walking the dry creek beds will turn up abundant opportunities to photograph fall foliage.
WThis image of maple saplings surrounding a Ponderosa pine trunk is typical of the scenery in the creek beds along the east entrance to the park. What's less typical is the stillness of the leaves. The exposure for this image was around one second, but the air was quiet enough that not a single leaf is seen moving in the printed version of the image.
