Square Butte is about 7 miles from where I live and right beside the road. I've literally driven past it over a thousand times on trips to Page, Arizona and elsewhere. I've often thought it might make a good photo, and have tried several times to take one, but just didn't get the right light. Then one morning in mid-September 2010 I woke up, looked out, and saw a mostly clear eastern sky and generous clouds piling up in the west. This was an ideal combo for the image I had in mind, so I quickly drove out. Sure enough, the sunrise color reached all the way to the western horizon. The storm continued to advance, and I took pictures for about 20 minutes before heading home.
